The best way to cut or polish zirconia is with a fine grit burs that have been optimised for this use however this bur is also perfect for adjusting composite and even other ceramics.
This inverted cone bur pattern is actually really helpful for occlusal adjustment while maintaining some fissure/ cusp incline anatomy. The inverted cone shape is used a lot by laboratories for this reason but in our experience is used less chairside.
These burs should be used with copious water and a light touch to avoid phase changes in the zirconia. Take careful note of the maximum speed for these burs as they are less effective when used too fast. Ideally these should be used in a speed increasing handpiece as an air rotor is typically too fast.
