The best way to cut or polish zirconia is with a fine grit burs that have been optimised for this use.
This round bur pattern can be used for occlusal adjustment of zirconia restorations (but can also be used for other ceramic or composite) and is an ideal size for fine adjustment.
This small round shape is also a good option to start accessing through zirconia restorations for endodontic treatment. The small surface area allows the dentist to gain some purchase getting through the external restoration surface.
Once the access is started the dentist may wish to swap to a zirconia cutter
These burs should be used with copious water and a light touch to avoid phase changes in the zirconia. Take careful note of the maximum speed for these burs as they are less effective when used too fast. Ideally these should be used in a speed increasing handpiece as an air rotor is typically too fast.
