EXPERT OPINION

Polishing zirconia after occlusal adjustment was always a concern until we found the Frank Dental zirconia polisher system. The three-grade sequence — coarse green, medium red, fine yellow — produces a consistently excellent result on monolithic zirconia and we have had outstanding results on lithium disilicate and feldspathic porcelain too. The key that catches people out: all zirconia polishing and cutting burs in this kit need to run at significantly lower speeds than a standard diamond, with high-volume coolant. If you are used to reaching for a coarse diamond on zirconia, the counterintuitive truth is that fine grit at controlled speed is actually more efficient — coarse burs burn and lose cutting ability almost immediately on zirconia.

The Bur Stand
Designed & manufactured by Incidental — 30 holes, fully autoclavable Holds the full kit with spare slots for your own additions. The open-hole design means you can autoclave burs seated in the stand with no decanting required. Numbered positions make reordering straightforward — download the wall chart below and pin it up.
The Burs

The kit contains one of each of the following. All burs are available to purchase individually.

CAR-7 to CAR-22 — Frank Dental Zirconia Polishing System | Max 20,000 RPM with high-volume coolant (min 50ml/min) A three-grade chairside polishing system — coarse (green), medium (red), fine (yellow) — available in point, cup, and disc patterns to cover every surface geometry. Primarily designed for zirconia but produces excellent results on lithium disilicate and feldspathic porcelain. Always follow the full three-grade sequence for best results, and run with high-volume air/water coolant throughout. The polishing compounds are laboratory-grade and hard wearing.
CAR-25 — Amalgam & Metal Crown Removal Bur (C.FD34L.012.FG) | Max 160,000 RPM Cutting-edge geometry specifically optimised for efficient sectioning of metal — amalgam restorations and cast metal crowns. The lower maximum speed makes this well suited to speed-increasing handpieces for controlled, efficient cutting.
CAR-26 — Porcelain Bonded to Metal Bur (C.FD8XX.012.FG) | Max 160,000 RPM Carbide geometry optimised for porcelain removal but equally effective on metal — which means a single bur handles PFM crown removal from start to finish without swapping. Also the correct first bur for veneered zirconia crowns: remove the porcelain layer with this before switching to the zirconia cutter (CAR-27) for the substructure.
CAR-27 — Crown Cutter Zirconia (D.Z881.012.C.FG) | Max 150,000 RPM Fine grit is counterintuitively the most efficient geometry for cutting zirconia — coarse burs burn and lose cutting ability almost immediately against zirconia's hardness and toughness. For veneered zirconia crowns, remove the porcelain layer first with CAR-26 or a coarse diamond then switch to this bur for the zirconia substructure. Run with coolant at the lower speed limit.
CAR-28 — Rugby Ball Zirconia Polisher (D.Z379.023.F.FG) | Max 150,000 RPM The rugby ball profile is ideal for occlusal adjustment of monolithic zirconia crowns. Run with plenty of cooling water — inadequate coolant risks initiating microcracks or pulling crystals from the zirconia surface. Use as part of the full three-grade polishing sequence after adjustment.
CAR-29 — Large Tapered Zirconia Polisher (D.Z850.023.F.FG) | Max 150,000 RPM The tapered profile is the right shape for adjusting contact points and internal fit discrepancies on zirconia crowns — areas where the rugby ball cannot access efficiently. Same cooling water and speed requirements as CAR-28. Use within the full polishing sequence.
CAR-30 — Composite Removal Bur (C.22ALGK.016.RAL) | Max 30,000 RPM, RA slow handpiece Carbide geometry specifically designed to preferentially cut composite and adhesive while being conservative of underlying tooth structure — the right instrument for removing composite from orthodontic brackets, aligner attachments, and old direct composite veneers. The RA grip and low maximum speed give the control this precise task demands.

The kit contains 1 of each of the following burs complete with a 30 bur Incidental Bur stand.
CAR-7 to CAR-22

Polishing zirconia or ceramic after occlusal adjustment was always a big concern for us until we found these burs.

The Frank Dental zirconia polishers produce a consistently excellent finish on zirconia principally (for which they are designed) but we have also had outstanding results when polishing lithium disilicate and feldspathic porcelain so we recommend them for all porcelain polishing.

The polishing compounds are designed for laboratory use also laboratory use also and both high quality and hard wearing.

These burs come in a 3-grade polishing system from coarse (green), to medium (red) to fine (yellow). For best results dentist should follow this recommended polishing sequence.

The polisher are available from us in 3 patterns (point, cup and disc) to allow efficient polishing of all polishing surfaces.

Take careful note of the maximum speed for these burs which should also be cool to avoid damaging the zirconia.
The manufacturer the polishers are applied with air/water coolant at high volume (min 50ml/min).

Max speed 20,000 RPM

CAR-25- Amalgam and Metal Crown Removal Bur (C.FD34L.012.FG)

These carbide burs have been specially designed to have the optimal cutting-edge geometry for the efficient cutting of metal (amalgam or crowns)

Take careful note of the maximum speed for these burs as they actually need to be run at a lower speed and (of course) which makes them ideal for speed increasing handpieces.

Max speed 160,000 RMP

CAR-26- Porcelain Bonded to Metal Bur (C.FD8XX.012.FG)

These carbide burs have been especially designed to have the optimal cutting-edge geometry for porcelain. However, they are also work well on metal and so can be used for PFM crown removal without the need to swap burs.

Take careful note of the maximum speed for these burs as they actually need to be run at a lower speed and (of course) which makes them ideal for speed increasing handpieces.

Max speed 160,000 RMP

CAR-27- Crown Cutter Zirconia (D.Z881.012.C.FG)

Cutting zirconia is notoriously difficult because it has a very high strength, toughness and wear resistance. It is perhaps counter intuitive but what bur manufacturers have come to learn is that very fine grit burs are actually the most efficient burs for removing zirconia. Coarse grit burs tend to just immediately burn and lose efficiency immediately.

Please note that if the zirconia crown you are removing has a layer of veneering porcelain then this is better removed initially with the Porcelain Bonded to Metal Bur (CAR-4). Once through the veneering porcelain then revert to the zirconia cutter for maximum efficiency.

Take careful note of the maximum speed for these burs as they actually need to be run at a lower speed (of course) which makes them ideal for speed increasing handpieces.

Max speed 150,000 RMP

CAR-28- Rugby Ball Zirconia Polisher (D.Z379.023.F.FG)

The rise of monolithic translucent zirconia restorations has been very welcome in dentistry as they provide a good alternative to cast metal restorations in the posterior dentition. The problem that has arisen with monolithic zirconia is how best to adjust the fit and occlusion without initiating cracks or breaking out crystals from the zirconia dioxide.

These zirconia polishers are specifically designed to be used with plenty of cooling water to adjust and polish zirconia efficiently and safely. When combined with the other zirconia polishers in the range dentists should feel confident that they can safely adjust and polish zirconia crowns chairside.

We supply two patterns of zirconia polishing bur. The rugby ball shape is usually ideal for occlusal adjustments.

Take careful note of the maximum speed for these burs as they actually need to be run at a lower speed (of course) which makes them ideal for speed increasing handpieces.

We supply two patterns of zirconia polishing bur. The large tapered bur is normally ideal for adjusting contact points and any internal fit discrepancies

Take careful note of the maximum speed for these burs as they actually need to be run at a lower speed (of course) which makes them ideal for speed increasing handpieces.

Max speed 150,000 RPM

CAR-30 Composite Removal Bur (C.22ALGK.016.RAL)

Conservatively removing composite from orthodontic brackets, aligner tabs and old composite veneers can be challenging.

These carbide burs make this task a lot easier. They are specifically designed to preferentially remove composite and adhesive and are RA grip so can be run in a slow handpiece to facilitate control.

Take careful note of the maximum speed for these burs

Max speed 30,000 RPM
