How to Identify Your Hose Type and Determine the Compatible Coupling

Choosing the right coupling for your dental handpiece starts with understanding your dental chair’s hose type. In this guide, we’ll walk you through removing the high-speed coupling and checking your hose type so you can confidently select the right option—M4, M6, or B2.

This step-by-step guide includes annotated photos to make the process straightforward.

Step 1: Locate the Hose and Coupling

The coupling is the metal connector between your dental chair’s hose and your handpiece. It ensures airflow, water flow, and power transmission to your handpiece.

Step 2: Remove the High-Speed Coupling

To check your hose type, you’ll first need to detach the coupling:

  1. Firmly grip the hose near the coupling.
  2. Twist the coupling counterclockwise to unscrew it.
  3. Gently pull the coupling away from the hose.

Step 3: Examine the Hose Type

Once the coupling is removed, inspect the end of the hose.

You’ll typically see one of the following configurations:

  1. M4 (Midwest 4-Hole):

    • Four separate holes: one for water, one for air, and two exhaust ports.
    • Common in many modern dental chairs.

  2. M6 (Midwest 6-Pin):

    • Four holes like the M4, but with two additional electrical pins.
    • Designed for advanced handpieces requiring extra electrical connections.

  3. B2 (Borden 2-Hole):

    • Two holes: one for air and one for water.
    • Typically found on older or more basic equipment.

Step 4: Determine Compatibility

  • If your hose is M4, you’ll need an M4 coupling.
  • For M6, choose a coupling compatible with the 6-pin configuration.
  • If it’s B2, use a B2 coupling.

Step 5: Reattach the Coupling

After identifying your hose type, reattach the coupling by:

  1. Aligning it with the hose ports or pins.
  2. Twisting clockwise until snug.

This ensures your equipment is ready for use.
