It’s actually far more common for templates to have the holes too close together, so we’ve spent a lot of time refining the spacing to what we’ve found to be the most reliable across different cases. In our teaching and clinical experience, this distance tends to give the best balance between adaptability and stability of the dam.

That said, everyone’s technique, preferred dam thickness, and patient anatomy can vary, so your observation is completely valid. Thicker dams can definitely make the spaces feel wider when flossing through.
