EXPERT OPINION

The mix of brands here is deliberate — no single manufacturer does everything best. The EVE Occluflex and Twist polishers are genuinely the best composite finishers we have used at their price point. The Frank Dental carbide rose heads cut carious dentine more cleanly and predictably than traditional steel burs, and they autoclave. The Tor VM mandrel and discs sit alongside the diamonds for situations where a disc gives you better access or a cleaner bevel. Every bur earns its slot.

The Burs

The kit contains one of each of the following. All burs are available to purchase individually — diamond and carbide burs here and EVE polishers here.

D-1 / D-2 — EVE Occluflex Diamond Polisher, Medium & Fine | 3,000–8,000 RPM, 1:1 handpiece The Occluflex profile enters grooves and ridges that flat polishers cannot reach — ideal for finishing the occlusal surface of posterior composites, the palatal surface of anteriors, and facial groove anatomy. Use with water and light pressure.
D-3 / D-5 — EVE Twist Diamond Polisher, Fine & Medium | 3,000–8,000 RPM, 1:1 handpiece The twist geometry excels on labial surfaces and incisal edges of anterior composites. Use without water in short bursts to avoid overheating. Can also be used on posterior restorations where access allows.
D-12 — Tor VM RA Mandrel For use with the Tor VM polishing disc range at slow-speed contra-angle. Polishing discs are the best option for bevelling enamel margins, finishing anterior composite, and polishing posterior marginal ridges where a disc gives cleaner access than a bur.
D-13 — Carbide Polisher (C282K.014.FG) | Max 80,000 RPM Carbide polishers produce a superior cavity preparation finish compared to diamonds — removing unsupported enamel and creating a more uniform surface for bonding. Run this over all cavity preparations at low speed before sandblasting and adhesive application.
D-14 — Long Fine Diamond Bur (D.863.012.F.FG) | Max 225,000 RPM The extended length gives access to the base of proximal boxes for preparation polishing. Also useful for refining composite, removing excess resin, and clearing small overhangs without disturbing the adjacent tooth.
D-15 — Round-End Taper, Coarse Grit (D.850.016.F.FG) | Max 225,000 RPM Suitable for initial pulp chamber access but also useful for sectioning teeth during extraction or removal of large restorations, where the increased length gives better depth control.
D-18 — Tissue Cutting Round Bur (RD.801L.314.014M) | High-speed air motor, water off Designed for rotary curettage — run at full speed in air morot or speed increasing motor with the water off. Allows safe, controlled gingival tissue removal to access subgingival margins and achieve correct wedge placement without electrosurgery.
D-19 — Rugby Ball with Point, Fine Grit (D.368.023.F.FG) | Max 225,000 RPM The pointed tip accesses preparation margins that a standard rugby ball cannot reach, while the body of the bur is ideal for occlusal adjustment of direct restorations. A genuinely versatile finishing bur.
D-20 — Needle Bur, Fine Grit (D.392.016.F.FG) | Max 225,000 RPM The needle profile is the right shape for refining the cavosurface angle of proximal boxes, safely breaking contact points, and smoothing the walls of cavity preparations without over-reducing the preparation outline.
D-21 — Long Torpedo, Extra Fine Grit (D.390L.014.XF.FG) | Max 225,000 RPM The go-to bur for bevelling preparation margins and polishing the palatal surface of anterior composites. Also useful for the cervical zone of anterior composites, occlusal adjustment of posteriors, and defining secondary anatomy on anterior composite facially.
D-23 — Carbide Rose Head, 1.4mm (C.1SXM.014.RA) | Max 30,000 RPM The narrow shank gives better visual access to the cutting tip than traditional steel rose heads, and the carbide cuts carious dentine cleanly without the skating tendency of steel. Autoclavable and reusable. Use this smaller diameter for carefully clearing and refining the ADJ preparation and for placing grooves in anterior composites.
D-24 — Carbide Rose Head, 1.8mm (C.1SXM.018.RA) | Max 30,000 RPM Same narrow-shank carbide advantages as D-23 in a larger diameter for gross caries removal. The wider head clears bulk dentine efficiently while the carbide cutting edge gives you tactile feedback at the ADJ that steel burs don't.
D-25 — Round Ball, Fine Grit, 1.6mm (D.801.016.F.FG) | Max 225,000 RPM A fine-grit round ball for occlusal adjustment of direct restorations. The small diameter allows precise spot reduction without affecting the surrounding restoration surface.
D-29 — Round-End Taper, Fine Grit, Long (D.850L.016.G.FG) | Max 225,000 RPM The longer shank version of the round-end taper — ideal for refining the base and walls of proximal boxes in Class II cavities where standard-length burs cannot reach the gingival floor comfortably.
D-30 — Pear Shaped Bur, Coarse Grit (D.830.012.G.FG) | Max 225,000 RPM The pear shape is the right geometry for removing old restorations and accessing incipient carious lesions — the tapered body allows controlled entry and the rounded end avoids unnecessary preparation depth.
